The BIG Reveal: Master Bedroom/Walk-in Closet Renovation Complete!

It’s been a LONG journey this time, folks. We’ve been crackin’ away at this make-over since the weekend after Thanksgiving so I want to thank you for sticking with us and not giving up on this renovation! The holiday season certainly took us away from working on this make-over along with a vacation and some much-needed nights off. But alas, it’s done!

Let’s not wait any longer… Here’s the bedroom in it’s entirety!

Fixing It Fancy Master Bedroom: After

To get the full effect, let’s compare before and after photos, shall we? For the bedroom, I tried my best to capture the same angles so you could get a sense of what exactly we did here.

The above shot is a photo of what you see when you move to the corner to the right of our doorway. You can see the old window adjacent to the wall where we’ve knocked through and inserted a frosted glass door. What once was a bedroom on the other side of that wall is now our walk-in closet.

This next shot (above) is that same wall we went through. This was just after we took off the wood paneling so we could reuse it to balance out our sloped ceilings (one slop had paneling and one didn’t; who knows why…). Notice Shawn’s favorite part of the room – a flat panel 26″ LCD TV hanging in our corner. No wires were a requirement to keep this sleek looking. Oh, and don’t mind Ben’s collar hanging on the doorknob…

The three photos here show the nook that was once wallpapered and naked of paneling (as mentioned before). We evened out the ceiling woodwork which made the space much more unified and appear larger. I’ve taken two old cane-back chairs I found on Craig’s List that used to be dark wood and weird blue (for the upholstery). A quick paint and upholstery job creates the perfect pair of chairs for our little seating area. Note: yeah, yeah, that air conditioner takes away from the photo. We have yet to figure out a way to cover that properly without just slapping a box cover over it. Any ideas?

A quick turn to the left keeps us rotating around the room to the adjacent wall, as shown above. Notice the sconce base dangling from old electrical wiring in the center of the windows in the before shot. Turns out not only did the light work, but the wiring itself was dead. This created the perfect spot to hang a photo of our wedding in Central Park, NYC instead.

The overall theme for this room was a light and airy, but still sort-of beachy take on a bed and breakfast suite. We wanted to feel like even when we’re at home we’re at a retreat. Of course, treating ourselves to a little pampering meant Ben (our golden retriever) had to get in on the action as well. He now has a very plush cushion at the foot of the bed:

One of my favorite details of this space is on the nightstands. I found these great soap dishes on clearance at Target that matched our lamp bases perfectly. I picked up two and use them as “his” and “hers” trays for the tables. I toss my glasses, phone and chapstick in there before going to bed. In the morning, it’s all right there, ready and at-hand.

Let’s not forget though… this is only half of our renovation. Let’s move through that frosted door to the walk-in closet, hmm? As mentioned in earlier posts throughout this process, this room was a bedroom (actually meant to be a nursery) next door to our bedroom. Because it was so small, we have very few photos to show – our angles were limited. In these before and after shots, I wasn’t able to place the images side-by-side for comparison.

The top picture in the image above is a good shot of what the adjoining wall looked like before we moved in. The wallpaper on the top half was actually quite funny. It was kids’ paper that read things like, “I will not put the dog in my bed,” or “I will not hide my sister’s shoes.” The second photo there is the wall/angled corner facing where the door is now. I know it’s hard to picture the placement… sorry.

The third and later photos, however, are all our doing. You can see the white painted ceiling accompanied by a french three-light chandelier. The dark hardwood furniture is the PAX Ikea closet system complete with six small drawers, two full-size bottom drawers for each of us, a top shelf for my items and his along with two clothing rails.

We went with Saffron by Restoration Hardware (color-matched by Menards) for our wall color. At first I was concerned it would be too dark, especially with the wood furniture, but now I love it. In the bottom photo our robes hang neatly next to the door we picked up from our local Habitat Restore. It was a creamy off-white, but I painted it a bright white and frosted the window panes.

The images above show off the Ikea Billy bookcase that we already had on hand. It’s the same black-brown finish and with the glass doors, it’s perfect for showcasing my shoe collection. Yes, I have a fetish…

And I know I’m getting a bit long-winded here so I’ll wrap this up with a few of my favorite details from the closet. No room in my house is complete without an “f”.

And I love this close-up shot (though it is a little blurry) of one of the hooks we installed (to keep things interesting, I picked out three different ones).

That brings us to the end of this make-over. Although, is a room ever really done? We still have our crown molding joints to DAP and a few other oddities, but I think this room is complete enough to show off now. Thanks for bearing with me to the end of this long post and for your incredible encouragement along the way!
